Thrive

Lead UX/UI Designer

202o Jun – 2020 Nov

Due to the extra time on my hands with the Lockdown, I was able to take on this part-time project providing a B2C solution for companies to be able to create psychometric assessment campaigns for their hiring needs and make sure they only hire the best talent.

The core flows and ideas were already done and tested, so I was able to jump straight on it, create a design system, a brand identity and complete the user flows with the entire UI, optimising the UX on the fly and assisting the developers with their asset needs.

Due to the nature of the product, this is a desktop-only webapp, but we have optimised the landing pages for mobiles as well. Ever since completion, the company experienced heavy growth and they already expanded to the US Market a month after completion.

Lead Product Designer

2021 Jan – 2021 Jun

In the first half of 2021, I got the chance to shape the User Experience and User Interface of the Product from the early stages of development.

Created a design system, ran workshops and user testing sessions to learn about the perception of the product and refine user flows.

Developed 3 models of monetization opportunities and managed a complete rebranding of the platform. Fully conversion optimised the landing pages using a multi-armed bandit system (organic conversions went above 20%).

Currently implementing the 4 key narratives that we identified during our usability research.

Co-founder / Lead Product Designer

2019 Apr – Present

I’m trying my wings on all venues of creativity, so as an avid reader, it was inevitable that I’ll end up trying my hand at writing too. I had a complex story forming in my head for many years, so at one point, after taking some creative writing masterclasses, I got to it.

I tried multiple writing programs, but complex stories can too easily get out of hand and in each program I missed something. When I realised that what I’m missing is are generally the atomic based design systems I use everyday in my work, I knew I’m onto something.

The problem was that Sketch, Figma and the rest of the graphic design software I used my systems with are not optimal for writing, I started looking for interfaces that are optimal for writers of various experience, that’s how I ended up taking a good look at twitter as the closest tool that – in an ideal world – could be the perfect tool. Imagine using @ and # to autopopulate your research and data on characters and objects in your story.

So I set out on my mission, created the initial concept pages and started recruiting people for workshops and 1:1 interviews. After talking to fellow authors, I was surprised that many of them felt the same, so I started fleshing out a concept for an app that would help us keep track on story particulars, enable collaborative storytelling and include a toolset for distraction free research at the same time.  I got raging positive feedback so I continued with the interviews and iterated the flows and functions until I knew that I had the perfect release candidate for an MVP. I did some research and decided with Flutter as the tech stack, then recruited a talented Flutter developer team from Asia.

Currently both the desktop and mobile apps are under development and en-route to be released early July under my guidance. The landing page recruits the starting user base with an 37% efficiency from our organic traffic, while our twitter provides us with a whopping 15% conversion from our follower base.

Evolve

Lead Product Designer

Oct 2019 – Jan 2021

Hired by the founder of Debut, Charlie Taylor as the first hire, I got the opportunity to work in this amazing, VC backed startup at the earliest stage, to explore opportunities to replace transactional recruitment processes with an informal approach just like dating.

We have evaluated a myriad of different ideas and approaches through workshops, focus groups and qualitative interviewing and quickly iterated on different features of the product to see what both the business and private users would value most.

After we picked the likeliest route to MVP, we have built a brilliant and lean developer and marketing team, then in a few months, we launched a basic MVP just as the first lockdown hit and reorganised the entire recruitment industry. Therefore the founding fathers made the hard decision to hibernate the project for the time being.

WeShop

Lead UX/UI Designer

2018 Aug – 2019 Oct

I led the company’s UX and UI improvement efforts while also influencing product decisions at one of the pioneers in the social commerce space. Our vision was to transform word-of-mouth recommendations into a shoppable instagram feed.

When I joined, we had no clear messaging, the system was inconsistent and quite difficult to understand. Working as an integral part of a multidisciplinary team of ~20, we delivered new concepts and high fidelity, multi-platform UI designs and specifications to the 12-strong tech team.

We used rigorous qualitative and quantitative testing on both the messaging and the functionality. Created a complete design system that enabled us to completely rebrand both web and mobile platforms within 3 weeks in March, while established consistency between web, ios and android platforms while simultaneously improved functionality and prototyped new features.

The latest landing page had a conversion rate above 10.5% and by completely reengineering the existing post creation process from a 17-step to a simple, 5-step method, we have increased our user activity KPIs tenfold. Moving from a money payout system to a heavily gamified voucher based incentive system, we also turned our content from a “sellout” state to a trustworthy perception that helped us to gain more microinfluencers to use the platform, while the company also received 9M investment from Primorous Investment Group and the company’s valuation grew from £5M to £27M.

Gaydar

Lead UX/UI Designer

December 2017 – March 2018

I was hired to overhaul the first UK based LGBTQ dating platform, Gaydar both on the web and app stores.

First, we redesigned the landing page that still got significant monthly organic traffic, but the conversion ratio was below 0.1%. The new, mobile optimised landing page performed month on month from 21.6% to a whopping 38.8%.

The second problem we had to solve was the nature of the product. While we operated mobile apps as well as a web platform, about 60% of members preferred to use mobile browsers instead of installing applications that could be found on their phones by other people.

As the web app was far from the experience of the apps, while we modernised the user experience on the applications, we ensured that the web app also mimics the behaviour and experience of the mobile apps. Using an atomic based design system allowed us to work fast while keeping consistency. This approach almost tripled retention rates and significantly increased the number of premium subscriptions on both the existing and new member base. The new app experience also increased a 1.2 average app store rating to 3.5 within a few months, so overall, this short project was a great success.

Co-Founder / Lead Product Designer

2021 Jan – 2021 Jun

Co-founded this company in July 2016. Given the chance to design my first physical product we have made it from idea to market by early November without any external investment.

I designed and developed everything including the whole branding, packaging, developed an e-commerce site, created the first product prototypes and led the product to the stage it started trading, then scaled up production and thanks to the lean methodology, the company eventually broke even.

CEO/CTO/Lead Designer

Nov 2012 – Sep 2013

I had the chance to lead my vision from a whiteboard concept to its public beta phase. The problem we have tried to solve was that streaming services and digital music stores cannibalised the artists’ income. We tried to remedy that situation by incentivising listeners to share the word about the music they liked via tracked social media reviews, earning credits through the process that they could use to purchase their favourite tracks.

Starting with whiteboard sessions and workshops with artists and record labels, we drew out the initial wireframes, tested the ideas and iterations through over 100 hours of both qualitative and quantitative testing with consumers, then created the UIs with two additional designers joining our team. At the last stage, we got the apps developed through an outsourced team of 7 developers.

Presented and pitched the product to investors and the tech community at various places such as London Business School, Mozilla HQ London and startup events. Worked about 70 hours a week till we hit the public beta stage, so I got a healthy taste of startup life as my first role in the UK.

My role concluded when we received £200,000 funding as soon as we entered our public beta stage.

Visual Designer / Developer

2011

In 2011 I had the opportunity to rebrand and create a nice user experience for this digital record label including a consistent cover art template system.

The website was then developed using WordPress as the CMS and integrated with their distribution system using a custom developed plugin.
